We live a few block away from Bollicine restaurant and usually we dine at any one of the italian restaurants at robertson walk aerea but of course after a few years we are a bit bored so we were very happy when, while jogging one morning, we saw the new restaurant at the rivergate.
We asked for a table by the window and the manager reserve for us a table by the sofa which makes the after dinner very comfortable while sipping a glass of wine or two but is a bit too deep for eating so not really ideal if you like to rest your back. anyway a small matter. My daughter and I shared their caponata with scamoza cheese appetizer because it's like a ratatotuille and yes we are French so we like both cheese and ratatouille. well, the italian version with the melted scamoza and the balsamico reduction is really appetizing, we enjoyed a focaccia bread with it while my husband was "busy" with his seafood salad which unlike any other restaurant we went so far, comes luke warm, which means they just made it rather than pre-cooked and kept in the fridge sometimes for days...the seafood was fresh and the best part were the texture of the prawns and the squid rings, firm and not chewy, the flavour was just the way we espected to be with a twist we never found before in Insalatta di mare, roasted capsicums to add some colour I guess but is also a nice bite.
For main I had the tortelli mushrooms in cream sauce and parma ham, simply DELICIUOS! the portion seems small but actually is really filling, the chef is right, one more tortelli and I would not have any room for dessert later.
My daughter had a tuna steak with italian tomatoes and the even though is rather a simple recipe what really pleased us was the flavour of the whole recipe, the tomatoes are imported from italy and the tuna perfectly seared, the olive oil and the other herbs and ingredietents brought us back to Nice in France where we come from. My husband was in a seafood mood so he tried the prawns with the scallops in saffron cream sauce. It came with a prosecco risotto which blends very well with the saffron sauce. The large prawns where crunchy but the scallops a bit over cooked for my taste, the saffron sauce was again a surprise while i never associated it with seafood, my husband love it!
No much room left for dessert though so i just had a scoop of home made chocolate ice cream (gelato)very smooth and rich. While both my dining companions skipped, to be frank also because the dessert menu has nothing really appalling. As usual tiramisu and pana cota, boring.
We drank house pour wine both white and red recommended by the chef which by the way is the owner, and his recommendations turn out to be very good, a white wine from south of Italy called ....bianco and a red tuscany reserva wine, good value for money.
Next week my parents are coming to visit us and guess where we will bring them for dinner? Bollicine, of course!
